Lessons from Building a Capsule Wardrobe

Do you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear?

I know how you feel. Early in my career, I worked for a upscale clothing store. I had plenty of clothes but it wasn't until I got out of that environment that I really started implementing all the things I learned when styling other men and women.

Once I invested in my capsule wardrobe, I can look back and tell you the lessons it has taught me over the years. Before I share my lessons, everyone has reasons to build a capsule wardrobe but I would recommend it for one reason-- investing in yourself.

My lessons:

  • It taught me to really think about how I felt and looked in every piece that I wear.
  • It taught me that quality over quantity was essential.
  • It helped me save money over the years because I bought to replace and only added a couple of pieces each season.
  • It taught me to clean out often and access my wardrobe at least once a year.
  • It taught me to be more creative in mix and matching and think about that when I buy.
  • My final lesson is self confidence. I feel better about myself when I dress well and feel good with what I am wearing. The two times that I drifted away from my capsule wardrobe are the two times that I felt the worst about myself. Once I got back on track is when I felt better about how I looked and felt.

This is a journey and it can be fun and cathartic. You have so many resources at your fingertips. Pinterest is my go to tool for inspiration and creating new looks from my own pieces. I also use Instagram for other inspiration. There are endless resources and sometimes hard to know where to start.

I created a guide that will walk you through the process based on my styling experience and years of applying this same process to my own wardrobe. If you think the steps are enough, I created a Pinterest post just outlining the 8 steps with some instruction behind each step. Pinterest Link

I hope you will consider this and enjoy the process.

Happy Dressing!
